Universal Design

Winston Churchill said, "First we shape our houses, then they shape us."

Not anymore.....

The average American home is over thirty years old.  Homes in the  United States are built to accommodate the average 25 year old, six foot tall male.  In the 1980's, there was movement to ergonomically design work environments to function for the user.  The ergonomic design movement has finally hit home with universal design concepts.

Universal design combines the aesthetics forms of design and engineering function with the reality of human diversity. The term Universal design was coined by Ron Mace in the 1980's who established the Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University.  Ron defined Universal design as  "a design for all people that incorporates products as well as building features and elements which, to the greatest extent possible, can be used by everyone."

The intent of Universal Design is to simplify life for everyone by making products, communications, and the built environment more usable by as many people as possible at little or no extra cost. Universal Design benefits people of all ages and abilities.  Universal design features are not set apart designs that look institutional but are part of a regular design plan that have an added benefit of anticipating future needs.

Ageless Designs mission echoes this intent by designing for a lifespan by making a home fit if you are 7 months, 7 years or 70+ years old.  As a lifespan design firm we specialize in making environments work for people.

Ageless Designs knows that:
"We can shape our homes to work for us, we refuse to have a house gives us limitations in creating a home"
